TVET colleges in South Africa are pivotal in equipping students with practical skills for the job market, but financial constraints often hinder access to higher education. Luckily, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial assistance to eligible TVET college students, easing their financial burdens. With fifty accredited public TVET colleges spread across 364 campuses nationwide, these institutions operate under the oversight of the Department of Higher Education and Training. Through the Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006, the Department regulates the establishment and operation of these colleges.

NSFAS distributes bursary funds to public TVET colleges, although funding sources may vary among campuses. Responsible for aiding economically disadvantaged students, NSFAS offers bursaries to eligible recipients, covering various allowances and expenses for TVET college students. Prospective students must understand the NSFAS application process and the availability of financial aid at different TVET colleges.

NSFAS provides the following allowances to students:

  • Personal Care Allowance
  • All students funded by NSFAS get a personal allowance which is R2 900 per year.
  • Transport Allowance

If you live less than 40km away from the College, you’re eligible for the transport allowance and you’ll receive R7 350 per year.

Accommodation Allowance
For students who live in private accommodation more than 40 km from the College:

  • Students who live in rural areas receive R15 750 per year
  • Students who live in peri-urban areas receive R18 900 per year
  • Students who live in urban areas receive R25 200 per year

If students are residing in the College’s hostel accommodation, their accommodation allowance comes to R33 000 per year
