How to Become a Northwestern University Student:

The average GPA of admitted students is 4.1, but at an excellent university like Northwestern, a high GPA isn’t enough; students must also choose to take the most rigorous courses (AP, IB, Honors, etc.) available. Admissions officers at Northwestern want to see students make the most of the rigorous educational possibilities offered to them.

Northwestern additionally analyzes students’ SAT and/or ACT scores as part of the comprehensive assessment process. The admitted students’ average SAT range is 1450 to 1540, while their average ACT range is 33 to 35. As a result, to be a strong prospect, an applicant must have extremely high standardized test scores.

However, the Northwestern admissions process entails more than just numbers. Northwestern evaluates applicants’ applications holistically, taking into account their GPA and test scores, as well as their essays, teacher recommendations, and extracurricular activities. Admissions officers are looking for essays written in the student’s own voice that convey a compelling tale about who they are and how they think about and interact with the world.
