Technical and Vocational Education and Training in SA

There are 50 licensed and recognized public TVET institutes in South Africa, with 364 campuses spread across the country’s rural and urban areas. The Department of Higher Education and Training administers the Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006, which controls the formation and operation of public TVET colleges.

TVET colleges are dedicated to providing high-quality education and training to students so they may begin their careers with the skills and competencies they need. The two main courses offered by TVET colleges are:

  • National Certificate (Vocational) qualifications, the NC (V), and

TVET colleges offer the following additional qualifications and programmes:

  • Selected UNISA and other qualifications registered on the NQF,
  • Occupational work-integrated programmes: leadership and apprenticeships, as well as trade tests,
  • Skills programmes and non-formal short courses, and

Tvet colleges application documents needed to apply:

The following documents must be submitted due to applying to the college:

  • A unique/valid Email address and cellphone number
  • 3 certified copies of ID of Parent/Legal Guardian
  • 3 certified copies of ID of Learner
  • South African applicants will need an ID number.
  • Foreign applicants will need their certified copies of passport numbers.
  • Copy of your school qualifications (eg Senior Certificate)
  • A certified copy of your latest results/Grade 9 or Higher;
  • Proof of Residence.
  • SAQA approved foreign qualifications
  • Proof of medical insurance or cover
  • Valid study permit

HOW TO APPLY

Step 1.

  • Identify the course you wish to study, career counselling is available.
  • Complete the online application for the chosen programme/ course

Step 2.

  • Attach your application documentation (Certified ID Copy, Results, Next of Kin ID Copy).
  • Your documents will be checked and approved if they are clear and certified but will be rejected if they are not clear or they have an outdated date stamp.

Step 3.

  • You will receive an e-mail after every step, updating you about the status of your application.
  • After 3 June, the college will start the selection process and communicate with you regarding the status of your application via e-mail.
  • The e-mail will have details of the registration details.

    Step 4.

  • If you are admitted, you will receive an e-mail informing you that you are “Provisionally Accepted” and you will be expected to accept the offer on your Student Portal and print the Enrolment form.

Step 5.

  • Finalise the process by visiting the campus to finalise your registration.
    • When you visit the campus, you need to bring the following documentation with you:
    • Certified copy of your ID
    • Certified copy of your parent or Next of Kin
    • Proof of residence (foreign students)
    • Certified copies of highest qualifications OR
  • Certified copies of the latest school results
