The most expensive four-year institutions in the United States are ranked according to one year’s out-of-state total cost list price for the 2024/2025 school year. Tuition, accommodation, and board (or expected off-campus living expenditures), books and supplies, and other fees make up the total cost.

A college’s Academic Rating is a CollegeCalc assessment of its overall academics and effectiveness. The scale runs from 0 to 100, with 50 serving as the median for all eligible colleges. The dollar value of a school’s academic rating is calculated by comparing the average price paid by students to the school’s academic rating. Colleges with a “n/a” ranking did not provide enough information to generate a score.

To say the least, college in 2024 is a little different. The number of applications for some schools increased dramatically (and acceptance rates plummeted). Many schools also waived the standardized tests that were previously required for admission. What is the most expensive college?

While the pandemic limits on-campus life, some schools are giving students a financial break (estimated discounts in the hundreds of dollars). Duke University has reduced its student activity and recreation fees for 2024, following a barrage of criticism from students and alumni.

The National Center for Education Statistics ranks the 50 most expensive four-year colleges in the United States based on published out-of-state tuition, annual fees, and residential fees.
