Which Tvet Colleges Offer Teaching
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes provide a beneficial route to your teaching profession if you are passionate about education and desire to become a teacher. To meet the increased demand for trained teachers, TVET colleges have expanded outside conventional technical subjects. These colleges have risen to the challenge of meeting the growing demand for qualified teachers by providing teaching programs that combine theoretical foundations with real-world classroom practice.
There are fifty registered and accredited public TVET Colleges in South Africa which operate on around 364 campuses spread across the rural and urban areas of the country. Public TVET Colleges are established and operated under the authority of the Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006 and resort under the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Is there a teaching program at TVET College?
You must have completed Grade 9 in order to enroll in classes at a TVET college. The minimal prerequisite is Grade 9, however, you can study beyond that. However, if you enroll in a TVET program in education or teaching, you will only be able to work as a childcare provider rather than a school teacher.
What is the duration of a teaching course?
Four years are required as a minimum to become a qualified school teacher. A one-year PGCE can be completed to become a teacher if you already hold a bachelor’s degree, but a minimum of four years must still pass in total study time.
Do I need a degree to become a teacher?
The title “teacher” is fairly inclusive, and many persons who do not hold degrees make a living by doing so. Having said that, a degree is a must if you wish to work as a teacher at any South African institution that is overseen by the Department of Education.
What degree is most suitable for teaching?
In South Africa, there are two paths that can be taken to become a teacher, and they are both as valid. A Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree is the most direct path to take. Full-time study for this degree takes four years. A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) program is the alternative. This is a full-time, one-year course that can only be taken after earning a three- or four-year bachelor’s degree.

Which universities offer teaching?
In a press release from April 2021, the Department of Education stated that it was collaborating with 24 universities around the nation that provide teacher preparation. The following ten institutions were all providing teacher preparation at the time of writing: UJ, Stellenbosch, Unisa, Wits, UP, NWU, UCT, Walter Sisulu, UKZN, and CPUT. It does not appear to have provided the whole list.
